Instagram, Intellectual Property, and Permission

Instagram, Intellectual Property, and Permission

Marketers & IP folk – I need your take on the third party use of  Instagram photos. As I’m sure you know  (and if you don’t… hey!) we do a Photo of the Week series on the CheapEats blogs  (Toronto / Ottawa) which we’ve been running using our Flickr Groups (Toronto / Ottawa  and very soon Vancouver / Montreal )   I’d to expand the submission options to Instagram, a la Gastropost who allows people to submit photos for their weekly challenge simply by tagging them in Instagram. But here’s my question: is tagging enough to give permission for reuse? I.e.…

Poutine For The First Time (from CETOblog.com)

Poutine For The First Time (from CETOblog.com)

One of the great things about having interns from away, is that you get to introduce them to food.  Or at least you do when you work at CheapEats!  That means you also get to revisit and re-experiencing foods and cuisines that have become ubiquitous and by extension taken for granted. via www.cetoblog.com

Our New Intern From Korea

Our New Intern From Korea

For the last couple of weeks we've had an intern, Gwanghyung aka David, working in the office with us. It's been great having him here, and he has been a great help in setting up some processes that were long overdue for review. Since he has been working so hard, I thought he should get a little blog love, and we did a quick Q&A interview for the CheapEats blogs which you can read here: Our New Intern From Korea

Top 5 Toronto Weekend Meals

Top 5 Toronto Weekend Meals

Kim Vallee of At Home With Kim Vallee and On The Web With Kim Vallee invited me to send her a list of my Top 5 places to eat in Toronto. It’s always hard to limit myself to only 5 (that’s why I publish CheapEats guides with 200-365 recommendations)… but I was able to control myself and send her 3 CheapEat options for brunch & lunch, and 2 not-so CheapEats options for dinner. For example: The Fish Store and Sandwiches The best fish sandwich in Toronto. Not to be missed, but don’t expect fancy service or plush seating. The focus…

Julie Wilson of Seen Reading is doing a podcast series of readers reading out loud. This is not my best reading ever. In fact, it’s actually a pretty poor reading. But it’s a GREAT project!

Lex In The Sky

Lex In The Sky

As part of Amex’s launch of Summerlicious, I was invited to have breakfast in the sky, 35 metres above Dundas Square. This photo was taken by Chef Christopher Matthews. The photo I was gifted when we landed, the one by the professional photographer, was most certainly NOT above the nose. I think I’ll get chefs to shot me from now on. It was the most invigorating breakfast I’ve every had… and one of my top 10 dining experiences so far. The food was okay, the company was great and the view was spectacular. That is when I relaxed enough to…

er… umm… did I mention?

That Mini Book Expo is ON?   Right now?  Over at www.minibookexpo.com. Yes this year it even has a brand new, shiny URL of its own. (Which also means this is all I’m going to say about it here.) This year I’ve invited the publishers to partner with us and the response has been phenomenal! 11 books ready to be claimed, 60+ still to be released as quickly as I can (2-4 per day), and more coming in.  There are some amazing titles on the list which, in previous years, wouldn’t have made the release list because I would have kept…

Hand Made Noodles at Sun’s Kitchen

Hand Made Noodles at Sun’s Kitchen

Click to Play One of the cool things we ended up doing this weekend with Rockr & Junkii was hitting the Pacific Mall. We’ve gotten lots and LOTs and LOTS of recommendations for the food there and we’d just been aching to sample what’s available.  The food available covers most of the traditional Asian cuisines and when you reach the second floor it’s hard to miss the smell of fresh waffles wafting down the narrow aisles. After cruising all the restaurants, food kiosks and vendors in the food court, everyone except Stephen ended up in front of Sun’s Kitchen ordering…
