A Week of Daily Dramas

A Week of Daily Dramas

Also known as trying to catching you up on what I was up to the week around the launch. (You can also read the twitter version here) Sunday’s Drama – Honk, Honk, I’m Driving a Big-Assed Vehicle! The Big-Assed Vehicle We booked a mid-sized car at a great rate of $161 for a whole week, but somehow ended up with a big-assed vehicle (or “cross-over vehicle” in the current vernacular). Cool part? We got a vehicle with all the bells and whistles – seat warmers, Sirius radio, seating for 6 and plenty of room to move our entire office to…

NaBloPoMo? No. GitRDunMo!

NaBloPoMo? No. GitRDunMo!

As most of you know, because I’ve tapped you to do some proof reading or emailed asking you to zip over and check the price for poutine at a pataterie with no phone, we’re in the throws of book production on the new edition of CheapEats Ottawa. My hope (cross-your-fingers-the-printers-will-agree) is to have it in bookstores before Xmas.  And just to be clear, I will count 1 book in 1 bookstore on December 24th as success if I have to.  Though I’m hoping for better. It’s actually pretty exciting – the book looks great and makes me hungry when I…

CEOT: Caribbean Flavours’ Fire

I just got the following sad news from CheapEats Ottawa contributors AE & RP: AE said: "Sad news here: Caribbean Flavours, a restaurant on Somerset that I reviewed for CheapEats burned down Tuesday. Hopefully they will rebuild." Based on the news reports below, owner Frederick White had plans for a 5-years anniversary celebration on Saturday.  All reports indicate he plans to rebuild and reopen under the same name.  Fingers crossed! Links to news reports on the CEOTBlog…

Jason Turner’s Cartoon Profile

Jason Turner’s Cartoon Profile

As mentioned before, Jason Turner, the illustrator, did a profile of me in the current Broken Pencil. It’s out, it’s great and with his permission  I’ve posted this frame from the whole strip. It’s kind of odd seeing yourself in a cartoon strip.  Cool, but odd.  Especially when someone hits the mark as well as Jason did.  Look, he even got the basketmobile right!  Was he stalking me? How did he know to draw the bearded man beside me in the market? hmmmm. This entire edition of Broken Pencil rocks, but perhaps that’s just because it’s about food (or perhaps…

Eventful 4way

Eventful 4way

Today was a surprising day.  I expected it to be fairly slow and easy since I was packing up… but it was event filled. First, The News EMC published an article on CheapEats Ottawa and our call for recommendations.  Tom Collins, yes that's his name, wrote a great article and we're already seeing recommendations flowing in. Next Rockr & Junkii decided to take me the open-air play in Strathcona Park.  This was a traditional summer activity for me when I lived in Ottawa, and it was great to go again. AND, in the line up to the play, I ran…

Natalie MacLean’s Red, White and Drunk All Over

Natalie MacLean’s Red, White and Drunk All Over

CheapEats Ottawa celeb Natalie MacLean, of Nat Decants fame, just announced the launch of her first book - Red, White and Drunk All Over. Natalie reports that "Red, White, and Drunk All Over will be in all major book stores in Canada August 29 and in the United States September 19. You can pre-order your copies online" Natalie is smart, knowledgeable and even more importantly, funny.  The book should be great, I can't wait to get my hands on it.
