Instagram, Intellectual Property, and Permission

Instagram, Intellectual Property, and Permission

Marketers & IP folk – I need your take on the third party use of  Instagram photos. As I’m sure you know  (and if you don’t… hey!) we do a Photo of the Week series on the CheapEats blogs  (Toronto / Ottawa) which we’ve been running using our Flickr Groups (Toronto / Ottawa  and very soon Vancouver / Montreal )   I’d to expand the submission options to Instagram, a la Gastropost who allows people to submit photos for their weekly challenge simply by tagging them in Instagram. But here’s my question: is tagging enough to give permission for reuse? I.e.…

potential @ camaraderie

potential @ camaraderie

Finally, I’ve got the photos from the reception up on Flickr and ready to share. The folks at Camaraderie, Toronto’s newest co-working space, invited me to hang a collection on their walls. I have selected the brightest, most vibrant of my photos in a collection called Potential @ Camaraderie  to reflect the vibrant folks who work in the space. The slideshow below  shows the photos in the collection, photos of them being framed and hung. And of course the reception we held on August 3,2010 sponsored by the kind folks at Heineken and LittleKitchen.ca on August 3rd.  We had a…

The Month in Review

The Month in Review

[Looking for a holiday message? I give you an Xmas story: Is that you Santie Claus? Happy Ho Ho Ho!] Monitoring the posting on the blog, you might think I’ve gone into hiding for the last month or so.  When in fact I have been on the phone steadily since the month began.  And it has been successful! Only 9 pesky restaurants still elude our crack team of fact checkers.  Our elite squad has been dispatched  and they have “ways” to get a restaurant to share their secrets. Those final 9 will succumb before Santa recovers from his jet lag.…

When Karen Says Drink, I Say How Much.

When Karen Says Drink, I Say How Much.

Have I told you guys that Karen Kurdyak has been sharing her insider's tips on the best values in the bi-weekly Vintages releases on the CheapEats blogs? Cousins Karen is a long-time CheapEats contributor and is consulting with the LCBO.  I've been following her wine emails for a couple of years now.   (Though I've never been able to get her to play the three-for-$20 game with me. ) She always makes great recommendations without ever sacrificing quality.  If you haven't checked out her tasting notes and recommendations before, tomorrow's release is looking pretty good.  Well, for red drinkers anyway. Check…

What’s Up

What’s Up

He’s In MY Fridge Or more accurately, what’s not up. My laptop is misbehaving.  It won’t boot.  Luckily we’ve been able to remove the hard drive and successfully do a full backup of all my current files (including the CheapEats Ottawa database -phew!) However, the bl***ping thing still won’t successfully complete the boot process. In response to my question of ”what to do”, my friend Keith has suggested: Think of something fun and irresponsible to do, since you just got a get-out-of-appointments free card for about two days. After which, drill a hole in your old hard disk, and then go buy that…

Food Writing (or #79 Say Cheese)

Food Writing (or #79 Say Cheese)

Sometimes the meal just isn’t pretty enough to photograph… so I start writing with my food. And with my condiments. But I still wish my food writing was as stylish as Dead Robot’s I guess I’d better leave the ketchup to him.  Taters are obviously my medium.

Today’s Lunch: Jerk Chicken Sandwich

Jerk Chicken Sandwich Lunch @ The Real Jerk – CheapEats Toronto pg. 123 where KK says: "This reggae infused spot really makes you feel like you are in Jamaica… The menu is incredibly diverse, offering something for everyone… Of course you can get Roti ($5-7.50) – it wouldn't be Toronto's most famous Jamaican restaurant without those on offer."

CheapEats is…

CheapEats is…

At Canzine yesterday, we asked people to complete the phrase "CheapEats is…", here are some of the responses: CheapEats is… cheap! CheapEats is… wicked cool & handy. CheapEats is… a great idea! CheapEats is… a book. CheapEats is… radically necessary. Torontonians Continue reading "CheapEats is…" on CETOblog.com »Ottawans Continue reading "CheapEats is…" on CEOTblog.com »

Jason Turner’s Cartoon Profile

Jason Turner’s Cartoon Profile

As mentioned before, Jason Turner, the illustrator, did a profile of me in the current Broken Pencil. It’s out, it’s great and with his permission  I’ve posted this frame from the whole strip. It’s kind of odd seeing yourself in a cartoon strip.  Cool, but odd.  Especially when someone hits the mark as well as Jason did.  Look, he even got the basketmobile right!  Was he stalking me? How did he know to draw the bearded man beside me in the market? hmmmm. This entire edition of Broken Pencil rocks, but perhaps that’s just because it’s about food (or perhaps…
