Working Within The Rules – Live Below The Line

Working Within The Rules – Live Below The Line

Preparing for the Live Below The Line challenge has been our main focus around here this weekend. What we’ll eat, what we won’t. What to buy, what we won’t. How to maximize our food budget of $1.75 per day. Gerry has mentioned repeatedly how this would be “much easier in August when there is plenty of food to forage around Toronto.”   As soon as I tell anyone I’m doing this they immediately start coming up with creative ways to get us fed. “Oh that’s no problem for you with all the food events you go to”, one friend said.…

Leg 5 – Storms, Puppy, Snow, Fires – #LexGoFurther – A Ford Escape

Leg 5 – Storms, Puppy, Snow, Fires – #LexGoFurther – A Ford Escape

Prepare yourself.  I have left you waiting for the continued adventures of Lex Go Further – A Ford Escape for far too long.  It is now time for photos of the puppy interspersed with snow, food and a couple of tweets.  But mainly industrial-grade puppy cuteness. When last we spoke, I had just gotten onto a skidoo for the first time in my life to be whisked away to the island which has been a part of my life since I discovered it and claimed it for my own when I was 3. Here’s a quick summary of what was…

My travel companions for #LexGoFurther–A Ford Escape

My travel companions for #LexGoFurther–A Ford Escape

For the most part, I was alone while on this trip, but I did have some companionship during the trip. Gerry joined me for the warm-up leg from Toronto to Kingston, which meant once I got the car I had to wait for him to finish up his day before we could hit the road… waiting waiting waiting… I’d say I was patient, but I’d be lying. The Ford Escape itself was definitely one of my travel companions, too but I’m not much of a namer so it/she will be referred to as “the car”, the “Ford Escape”, “it” or…

Bad Day for Clarks + Tech

Bad Day for Clarks + Tech

So as I was about to write and tell you all about how my father dropped his cell phone in a glass of whisky, this happened. Bad Day for Clarks + Tech — Originally uploaded by LexnGer I was going to make comments about dad's mishap like:  how he should treat the phone as if it had a hangover and give it a couple of cups of coffee, a couple of glasses of water, an advil and then take it for a swim in the refreshing river. how whisky voids the warantee (Gerry's joke) something witty about pickled cell phones.…

Or Frankfurt.

When I called dad yesterday Tuesday to natter, chat and nag, we discussed Spain.  Of course. When he confirmed: “so Sunday you will be in Spain?” I said “yes, assuming the Air Canada Pilots don’t go on strike. And assuming the ground workers in Frankfurt don’t go on strike either.” From that point forward every time I said “Spain”, he interjected “Or Frankfurt”.   At this point the only warning from Air Canada is “Due to potential labour disruption by security employees. Passengers are urged to arrive 1 hour earlier than normal.” Here’s hoping that Sunday afternoon I’ll be walking…

May Flowers, more than just flowers in may

May Flowers, more than just flowers in may

May Flowers, more than just flowers in may — Originally uploaded by LexnGer Until yesterday I had no idea the phrase "April Showers bring May flowers"referred to a specific type of flower.Let alone to a tradition that had been happening in the Saint John CityMarket, were I practically grew up, for generations.Every May someone sets up and sells these bouquets of May flowers in themarket. My father told me that he used to buy these same bouquets for mymother before I was born. When he was looking at them yesterday I had noidea they were something so special. Originally uploaded…

Lex & Jim

Lex & Jim

It is very, very, rare to have a photo of my father and me. Perhaps because he avoids the camera and I’m usually behind it. After dressing sarcastically for dinner at Sandy & Mary Jo’s, Sandy grabbed the camera and snapped a number of shots of us together. Most are silly… okay, all are silly, but it’s nice.

Dad’s New Green Kayak

Dad’s New Green Kayak

Dad’s New Green Kayak — Originally uploaded by LexnGer I’m planning to write the folks at Wilderness Systems and tell them how pleased we are with their Pungo 140 kayaks. (Even though I call them Pongo sometimes) We’ve been using them on the river for 5 years now. From early spring when the ice goes out (usually March) to late fall when the ice starts coming in (often mid-late December), they are on the river carrying groceries, people and musical instruments to and from the island. Last year’s version of the Pongo 140 and the slick new hatch coverings caused…

5YAT: January 1, 2005

5YAT: January 1, 2005

1 January, 2005 – am=–9º, noon=+8º, pm=0º [This post is part of the 5 Years Ago Today Series] The sun was shining in my face as I got the fire going – felt happier than I had for about a week. The day was beautifully sunny but wet. All this sunshine has turned my mood around – woo hoo Happy 2005! But the warmth and recent rains haven’t done anything good for the ice. The ice on the mainland side has run the gamut from water-covered to looking live velvet with puddles. However at both Ladies Beach and Porcher’s End…

5YAT: I Blame CBC For My Meltdown

5YAT: I Blame CBC For My Meltdown

26 December, 2004 – Cold & Windy –14º [This post is part of the 5 Years Ago Today Series] Mainland: still wide open in HUGE patches and the gap is gaping. Beautiful ice structures where the ice formed against the rocks and then lifted off them with the tides. Glen-side: Looks like 8-10” thick when I walked out parallel to Long Beach. Big snow and wind tonight and tomorrow up to 20cm snow expected with winds gusting up to 70km.  With the impending BIG wind I won’t be crossing – I might just blow away. Not that I’ve dropped that…
