Gravy Pizza done right! With duck & caramelized onions!

Gravy Pizza done right! With duck & caramelized onions!

Gravy Pizza done right! With duck & caramelized onions! — Originally uploaded by LexnGer Some of you may remember my photo which made it on to This Is Why You’reFat, and into the print edition too. It was a photo of gravy pizza fromHouse of Georgie in Ottawa. Rockr & Junkii and I shared it, and we all agreed that it was bad for us,not well implemented and had some serious potential. Bannock, the new O+B restaurant,at the Bay has, manifested this potential intheir Roast Duck Routine Pizza. Yum! Now don’t bug me, I need to go into a carb…

Bean Pots.

Bean Pots.

Bean Pots. — Originally uploaded by LexnGer This is from a wonderful Sunday I spent driving though Quebec with Gerry O specifically to go to this binerie (beanery). The beans were fantastic – perfectly balanced between sweet and savoury. And the entire experience was right on the edge of “charming”. Luckily, we all were so interested in the process, the food and the story that we didn’t walk away feeling like we were cultural tourist in our own country. There are more photos on Flickr, which you can find though this shot of the beans from the pot – http://www.flickr.com/photos/lexnger/216364511 Originally…

CEOT: Caribbean Flavours’ Fire

I just got the following sad news from CheapEats Ottawa contributors AE & RP: AE said: "Sad news here: Caribbean Flavours, a restaurant on Somerset that I reviewed for CheapEats burned down Tuesday. Hopefully they will rebuild." Based on the news reports below, owner Frederick White had plans for a 5-years anniversary celebration on Saturday.  All reports indicate he plans to rebuild and reopen under the same name.  Fingers crossed! CEOT: Taste of Winterlude

CEOT: Taste of Winterlude

Winter is finally here and Ottawa is about to start it’s Winterlude celebrations.  If you’ve never been in Ottawa for Winterlude it’s a great time to visit, skate the canal (which I’m told will be open and frozen early February) and enjoy the cold. But for those of you who want to celebrate by sipping wine and perusing a menu, Taste of Winterlude is the event for you.  It starts tonight – January 19th, and runs until February 1, 2007.   Each restaurant is offering a prix fixe dinner menus of $20, $30 or $45 per person.  The menus include appetizer or…

The Finn – Introduction

The Finn – Introduction

The Finn – Introduction — Originally uploaded by LexnGer A friend, and regular CheapEats contributor, has just opened her own bar – The Finn @ 971 College Street just west of Dovercourt.  We were invited for the “introduction night” last week and I was really impressed. Ann & Scott have taken a slightly divey neighbourhood drinking spot and turned it into a place you’d be happy to bring a client to sample local microbrews or sip a martini. They’ve done a full HGTV-style redesign (without the HGTV-drama) on the space and come up with something that is slick and stylish. The…

QotD: Your fantasy restaurant

If you could open any sort of restaurant, what would it be like? It would have to be small 2-4 tables max for intimate fine dining with extremely limited hours menu-wise either a custom fresh market menu, or rotating menu based on a cookbook a month. But this would all be predicated on me having enough money that slow months, staff turnover and the high risk of complete failure wouldn't phase me.  I'd make sure I could staff with the best available talent, and not have to work the grueling 14 hour+ days that most restaurateurs put in. I spent…
