Instagramming My Week

Instagramming My Week

I have recently started using Instagram more.  After balking the trend and lamenting loudly, and frequently, about Instagram’s lack of collaborative, community-building and searching tools, I finally caved.   I blame the Food Bloggers of Canada conference. Well, that and Instagram’s slick and quick interface which makes it so easy to share a photo and push it out onto my social spaces. (Where I can collaborate and build communities). Since I’m just getting rolling with Instagram it’s one of the few (only?) social media spaces where I have less than 500 followers AND where I have a higher follow-to-follower ratio.…

Leg 1 – Toronto to Kingston – #LexGoFurther – A Ford Escape

Leg 1 – Toronto to Kingston – #LexGoFurther – A Ford Escape

The first step of Lex Go Further – a Ford Escape was picking up the Ford Escape. Rannie was there when I got it to give me a run down on the Sync & MyFord Touch,  Hands-free Lift Gate, and specifically the Active Park Assist Feature  which I can’t imagine anyone wanting to try their own for the first time!  (But more on that later).  I got the car around 1pm, did the run through with Rannie and headed back downtown. That left me calculating the best times to hit the road in order to avoid rush hour traffic. Sounds…

Construction Junction What’s Your Function?

Construction Junction What’s Your Function?

The end of my mother’s street in Kingston is a maze of fencing, gravel, pipes, limestone chunks and large construction machines. It’s like a play ground sandbox for grown ups (without the dog poo scaled-up of course). The street is a mess and has been for months on end. The goal, I believe, is to improve and update the infrastructure, which is good. What is less good is the banging and beeping and smashing sounds that start at around 7am and last most of the day. So much for a restful visit. The best past? Walking down Division street and…

What I Looked Like When I Was Here Last

What I Looked Like When I Was Here Last — Originally uploaded by LexnGer Or almost last, I found this one the wall of my high school! I can’t get a good shot of my High School Commencement photo from my cellphone. It’s too high on the wall. (So that one is coming later)

Kingston Farmers Market

Kingston Farmers Market

Kingtson Farmers Market — Originally uploaded by LexnGer When I was home, Di & Deb picked me up early Saturday morning for a visit to the Kingston Farmers Market. What great fun we had visiting old friends like Clark & Sue and checking out the cool foods. As with most Farmers Markets this is evolving quickly into a place to go and eat as well as shop.

Fare on the Square

Spending the long weekend in Kingston, Ontario had one unexpected reward: Fare on the Square More than just a public tasting event where you buy your tickets and wander the line of restaurants’ tables to sample each of the restaurant’s cooking, Fare on the Square is an homage to local products. The city sources all the products from local producers and growers (most or all of whom are vendors in the city market).  12 local restaurants were given the challenge, in an almost Iron Chef fashion, to show these ingredients off in their best light. The results were served for…

Kingston Eats

Kingston Eats

Since I am both "from" Kingston and the editor/publisher of the CheapEats Restaurant Guides, I get asked often where to go in Kingston for good eats cheap. Since I’m heading down to Podcasters Across Borders in Kingston this weekend, I decided to share this email which I wrote for a friend headed down to Kingston for the weekend.  It includes both cheap, and not-so cheap places mostly within walking distance of the waterfront. I’d love to hear your thoughts and any other recommendations you’d like to add to the pile. Casa Domenico – 35 Brock Street – It’s a new…

And She’s Done! [JiN roundup Part #2]

And She’s Done! [JiN roundup Part #2]

So there we were driving to Kingston for mom’s retirement. You heard about mom’s retirement, right? I’m sure I’ve mentioned it at least 3 or 4 times, or more. We arrived late Thursday night, went to school with mom Friday and spent most of the day prepping for the party Friday night including doctoring up her corsage with a used paint brush for authenticity. It went beautifully!  Or at least I thought it did… it was the first retirement party I’ve ever been to. There were over 50 people crowding into the University Club to celebrate mom and her colleague…

What? Who? Where?

What? Who? Where?

Okay, Okay… I’m back. Sort of. Ish. For those of you not up on the Whirlwind Adventures of Lex & The Travel Bunny here’s how it goes. About 2 weeks ago, immediately after meeting the OneDegree crew for drinks at Brassaii, I packed  things up and hit the road. First stop: Kingston for a short visit with mom, some last minute conspiracies with her colleagues for her upcoming retirement party and the discovery of some amazing photos of my mother as a young woman.  (BTW, retirement gift contributions are already up to over 50% even though the bar chart doesn’t…

It’s Just So High School

It’s Just So High School

For the start of my summer vacation, I thought I’d leave you with a little high school graffiti that I saw in a bathroom stall at my mother’s high school. Whether it’s permanently or just for the summer, it’s just a little reminder of why we’re all happy to be out of there. “She treats me like shit, so why do I still like her? Why am I afraid to speak up?” “No one likes him, doesn’t he get it?” response: “His mom probably told him ‘girls tease you because they like you’” “the waiting game of life’s best play…

Why does it always rain in Kingston?

Why does it always rain in Kingston?

DropPhoto courtesy of LexnGer. I get to explore my mom’s backyard and photograph raindrops to my heart’s content, usually returning to the house with wet pant cuffs, a sodden bottom and dirty feet. I don’t get in nearly as much trouble when it’s dry.LexnGer: ""
