Happy Pashmina to you!!!!

Happy Pashmina to you!!!!

Yes, finally, the last full day in Montreal and Gerry found the perfect pashmina for Lexa… how spoiled am I? (Wait! Please don’t answer that!) There we were, wandering the streets of Montreal, when we came upon a shop filled with wonderful fabric, and The Pashmina!!!Now, while you might think I am napping, I am really just bored waiting for our bl**ping camera to power up for this photo of the all-important Pashmina. After we fulfilled this quest, we realized we were famished… so off to Chinatown again where we ate at the Chinese Buffet place… not a bad deal…

We found St. Laurent

Today we found St. Laurent Boulevard… only a block or two the other direction… and much more our style than St. Denis.  Which, while lovely is a little too trendy (read pricey) for complete relaxation.  St. Laurent however is filled with food shops… just our speed. As we walked along the street we had to stop and stare in this window at the Chicken on the Grill – This photo does NOT capture how mouth watering this window filled with grilling chicken looked.  Boy oh boy, do we want to try this chicken. Sadly, the lineup is out the door…

Market Day #2 – Marche Jean-Talon

Market Day #2 – Marche Jean-Talon

After significant arm-twisting, nagging and pleading, Sam allowed as how we could come over for dinner Saturday night.  She’d even let us cook. So Gerry planned a baked pasta featuring sausages, peppers and beans… oh so very tasty! I spent the morning working at Cafe Java U on St.Denis where they had wireless.  (30 minutes free for every purchase) Gerry joined me for hamburger & poutine at Bien Bon (serious – Bien Bon), and then we headed off to Marche Jean-Talon to pick up supplies. Ger found a place with preserved lemons and an outside grill where they were cooking…

Dinner with Sam

Dinner with Sam

We arrange to meet with Sam, after work, at Place des Arts at 7pm.  She’ll jump on the bus, we’ll jump on the metro and it’s just 2 stops away from Berri-UQAM.   ”No problem” I say confidently, “I know Place des Arts”, and I do… however I took us to Place d’Armes. instead.  Even though Sam distinctly said, and I repeated, Place des Arts.instead (also 2 stops away from Berri-UQAM, just on the wrong line). We waited for about 15 minutes until I listened to Gerry and realized my mistake… back on the metro – phone call to Sam’s, where…

Afternoon at the Atwater Market

Afternoon at the Atwater Market

Gerry is in heaven – Atwater Market Heaven. So many cheese shops, so little time.  Cheeses, beers, cute cheese girls, free samples to charming anglo-men with sparkling blue eyes, how could he not love it? Gerry & The Cute Cheese Girl – Gerry’s New Favourite Cheese Shop. These were full before Gerry arrived and started tasting. Gerry’s New Favourite Cheese Shop – No cute cheese girl, but more cheese on 2 floors and a huge selection of beers Oh, Gerry’s found another New Favourite Cheese Shop Bread – Beautiful loaves, clandestine photography. Atwater Tarts – So very tasty!

Auberge Chez Jean

Auberge Chez Jean

Tucked in between St. Denis and St. Laurent, Rachel and Duluth, on rue Henri-Julien, chez Jean was filled with fascinating people from Mexico, France, Burlington, and Maine.  (though the Maine boys were up for the lowered drinking age) For 3 days we stayed on the middle of the middle floor, in a private room with no windows… the “green room”. The last 2 days we got a room at the back with a door opening out to the 2nd floor deck – well worth the first 3 days wait.

Metro Lex

Metro Lex

We made it to Montreal before Alex’s train left the station.  Now to boot it down to the train station in record time. Less than 20 minutes before his train pulls out. Down stairs, through turnstiles, onto the subway car, more turnstiles, up escalators, down escalators, up more stairs, along tunnels, through doors… After all that, Alex was already on the train when we reached the station.  Gerry stayed in the station with our luggage as Lex ran down more stairs and along the length of the train searching for Alex’s compartment (with a Via Rail employee’s help of course.) …

Day 6 – On The Road Again

Day 6 – On The Road Again

We hit the road around 9am after a quick Tim Horton’s breakfast stop on Hawthorne road. On to Montreal and we missed most of the rush hour traffic, though it was still pretty active at 10:30am. Cool meander through Montreal. Stopping for a brief stint in Westmount. Back to the highway under old stone arches and on old asphalt roads. Through Montreal by 11:30 and only missed one turn off. Pretty impressive for a pair of people easily distracted by shiny things such as… the long bridge in Quebec City (or was that the green bridge?) Quick stops for didgeridoo…
