Kingston Farmers Market

Kingston Farmers Market

When I was home, Di & Deb picked me up early Saturday morning for a visit to the Kingston Farmers Market. What great fun we had visiting old friends like Clark & Sue and checking out the cool foods. As with most Farmers Markets this is evolving quickly into a place to go and eat as well as shop.

5YAT: 24 Hours Ashore

5YAT: 24 Hours Ashore

20 December, 2004 – Snowy & Blowy & Grey [This post is part of the 5 Years Ago Today Series] Ack!  Dark! Though it is 0530. Happy I found the head light. Breakfast for me and the animals, packing and then strapped on the sled and started trudging (0715). [view of the island from the glen-shore as the sun started peeking up] Crossing was good! The snow on the ice was very slightly crusty and very slightly damp but it was an easy crossing. Then to the store & to town. As I drove through Rothesay more snow and wind…

Lunch At the Saint John Ale House

Lunch At the Saint John Ale House

As I mentioned in the previous post, I had the opportunity to lunch with my friend Craig at the Saint John Ale House when I was in New Brunswick last. Chef Jesse Vergen prepared us a Chef’s Choice lunch which was overflowing with local ingredients, great flavours and playfulness. Heirloom Beet & Sheep Milk Cheese w/ Horseradish Vinaigrette Chef Jesse started us off with a Heirloom beets fresh from his own farm, roasted & quartered dressed with a horseradish vinaigrette and served with a local raw sheep milk cheese.  I have to admit that I wasn’t all that chuffed about…

A Little Lunch In Saint John

A Little Lunch In Saint John

One of the delights of going home is the food.  I’ve told you about all the amazing produce my father grows on the island both in the garden and wild in the forests. I’ve talked about my friend Diane the chef who somehow always squeezes in time to share a meal when I’m home no matter how busy she is. And I’ve shared photos of me cooking everything from stripped bass to bagels over fire, lots of fire. But lately, I’ve been leaving the island and getting to explore the ever-evolving food scene in Southern New Brunswick. I’ve been quite…

The Opening…

The Opening…

What a whirlwind weekend.  As you probably know, I zipped down to Saint John to attend the opening of 50 Paces: an Installation.  I flew down the day of the show, and I was up at 4am to catch the recommended Airport Express for my 7am flight via Montreal. For some strange reason, I wasn't able to sleep on the bus or on either plane.  It might have had something to do with my dire and unsatisfied need for imodium from the time I got on the plane.   Luckily, once I arrived Sandy dropped me at his house for a rest before I was…

The 50 Paces Project – Artist Statement

The 50 Paces Project – Artist Statement

On request, I am posting the Artist Statement I wrote for 50 Paces: an Installation opening at the Saint John Arts Centre on Friday May 4th.  (That’s in Saint John, New Brunswick in case you didn’t know.) Happily, the universe has worked with us to shift things around enough so I can go to the opening Friday and then spend the weekend on the island. Woo  Hoo! How far do you have to walk to get a litre of milk? If you wanted a coffee, how many paces would it take to get to your local diner?  To get to your favourite…

50 Paces an Installation

50 Paces an Installation

You thought I struggled with picking a new name for this blog and writing my bio for In The Kitchen?    That, my dear friends, was small potatoes.  Baby potatoes. Seed potatoes compared to writing an Artist's Statement. "Why?", you might ask, "would you need an artist's statement?"  The Saint John Arts Centre is doing an exhibit on the 50 Paces Project!!  Once my mother, the art teacher, stopped laughing she offered to help me pull it together.  My friend Lorna, whose show Honeytrap is on at akau inc. right now,  has offered her advice on how to avoid sounding…

Photoblogger arrested in Saint John

Seriously!  At a business conference  in Saint John encouraging the eastern seaboard to work together for “business without boundaries”, local photoblogger Charles Leblanc was arrested for obstructing justice. He is asking for a public inquiry in the police’s actions in his arrest – which was captured on video by the CBC cameraman standing by his side when he was “obstructing justice”. And people wonder why I don’t move there.

How’s Jim.

I have to say – this sucks.  Dad has had a mild stroke and I’m back in New Brunswick again.  He’s doing amazingly well. Luckily it is a mild stroke and it looks like dad should be able to recover almost everything.  The primary impact is on his expressive communication, so I am spending 10 hours a day at the hospital working with him.  CLICK HERE to see photos of good stuff – friends, islands, flowers, and dad recovering. [05/07/09 -- Note - the original photo album has been removed... so some of the original photos are no longer available…
