How to Make Mulled Wine

Mulled Wine is a perfect drink for those cold winter nights by the fire. Or as a treat after coming in after a long ski or skating adventure.

Winter and mulled wine are the perfect combination. Especially when you have a nice cheese tray and good friends to go with them.

Mulled Wine Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1c sugar
  • 2 bottles of Red Wine (I use big fruity reds)
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cardamon pod
  • 2 peppercorns
  • 1 lemon – strips of peel
  • 1 lime – strips of peel
  • 1 clementine – strips of peel & juice (can be orange)
  • 1 star anise

Instructions

– put sugar in the pot with the lemon, lime and clementine peel, and clementine juice

– throw in the spices (except star anise). For a great Instagram shot, leave them loose, for ease of serving, put them in a cheese cloth bag or open tea bag used with loose tea.

– pour in 1 cup of wine

– simmer until the sugar is dissolved

– bring to a boil  for 2-3 minutes  (making a quick spice wine syrup)

– drop the temperature to low

–  add star anise

– add remaining wine

– keep it low and slow until the wine is warm

– serve!

Notes: you can vary everything to your taste.  But be warned, too many cloves and your mouth will start to go numb.  This is not a good thing.
