Celebrating National Kiss Day with a Challenge

Prepare yourself, I am celebrating National Kiss Day by sharing a lot of kissing! I mean a lot!

About a year ago Gerry and I decided to start a daily routine that would break us out of our daily routine and bring us closer together every day in a small way. We decided to use 1 second everyday to do a daily kiss video. Just one quick kiss a day, captured on video, where ever we happened to be when we remembered to do it.

We thought it would be a fun, simply and easy project that wouldn’t really mean anything to us day-in and day-out.  We are a close, loving and intimate couple (most of the time) but days are busy, we are busy. It’s surprising when you stop and look at it, how much time we spend apart. And when we are together, how easy it is to get distracted, lose track of time and forget.

We found that this one simple, 1 second everyday video was actually pretty challenging to do. Not one day, one day was easy. It was when we got to the fourth day that things started to get in the way. It was hard to do this regularly, continuously, for more than 5 days in a row.  I think our top running streak was 10-days and that was on vacation.

What we did find by doing this exercise was how wonderful it was to carve out even one second to focus on doing something together, something for us, something intimate and, frankly, something playful. It became a way for us to reconnect, even on our worst days. Because, let’s be honest, after 25 years together our days aren’t always sunshine and lollipops. Some days we weren’t really feeling it. Some days it was a trial to squeeze it in. Some days it was just another thing on our long laundry list of To Dos. But we did it.

We did it in the morning. We did it at night. We did it at Ben & Anna’s wedding. We did it in the office. We did it at the Ex. We did it while kayaking. We did it while on our bikes. We did it at work. We did it on vacation. We did it on road trips.  We got teased and we teased back. We got our friends to do it to… for one day, for one second at a time.

National Kiss Day Challenge

So here’s my challenge to you. Celebrate National Kiss Day by kissing someone you love. And don’t stop. Kiss them tomorrow too. Why not take a moment out of every day and focus on them, you and a 1 second kiss. It might change your life. It changed ours 1 kiss at a time.
