Alone on an Island

In late November 2004 through mid-January 2005, I spent winter make-up/freeze-up alone on a small island. Make-up or freeze-up as it is often known is that that period of time when a river or lake become uncrossable until it forms enough ice to become safe to cross by foot.

For this island, that historically can take anywhere from 2 weeks in a very quick year, to 2 months in a slow one. This was a slow one.

On the night of December 7th, the temperature fell quickly, and the ice started to form. The next morning, I woke up on an island, unsure of when I’d be able to leave.

All I had to do was keep the fires burning, feed the dogs, chickens and rabbits and wait for the river to freeze.

It was a life changing experience.

5YAT: The Bandit Breakout

January 11, 2010May 20, 2017 Alexa Clark 0 Comments Alone on an Island, Chicken, Crossing the River

When I got to the shore I saw Bandit standing on the cliffs, looking terribly romantic and wind swept (for a dog.) She moved around the island like a Queen, but came to me immediately when I called her. It looks like she unhooked her snib – nothing broken and it was easy to hook her back up.

Today is #NationalMoscowMuleDay, or so says one of those lists. Here at #FarmFarmBistro we’ve got a leg up, since I picked up these @iconicbrewingcompany Cabana Coast pre-made Moscow Mules at the @lcbo last week.
Do you every have one of those leftover lunches where you lust want to add a little veg and it turns into a massive salad? Today’s lunch at #FarmFarmBistro started out as left over shawarma
Tonight’s was pie night at #FarmFarmBistro with Marion’s fantastic game bird pie. It was tucked away in the freezer and was the perfect end to a long and busy weekend. (Especially since it was a heat and eat kind of meal!)
Fish taco night again at #FarmFarmBistro. A spicy seasoning on tilapia with a dredge of corn flour (finely ground corn meal), pan-fried on hot cast iron. Then stuffed in freshly toasted corn tortillas with our new favourite apple-brussel sprout slaw. Gerry & Bill both threw on quick pickled onions.
It’s #NationalClamChowderDay and so we went chowder crazy for #FarmFarmBistro dinner. Luckily chowder is a quick dish so I made both a Maritime Clam Chowder - a perfect echo of my childhood. And a Manhattan Clam Chowder reminding me of my visits to NYC. Small bowls so we could have both. Yum!
Wing night at #FarmFarmBistro. Dry Jerk, Messy Sweet Heart and Killer Greek alongside a big Greek salad from @winghouseschomberg. It’s nice to mix things up for #takeoutday.

Lost another good one, my friend Peter Suttie, seen here playing guitar with my dad on the steps of one of the cabins at our farm on the Kingston Peninsula, NB in 1972.
There is nothing better on a grey day than fresh hay!
My wood pile is getting smaller as my hair gets longer. And it’s getting snowed under too!
The first thing they did this morning when they got out into the paddock was run and jump and play. Everyone loves fresh snow!
No, this poo-poo platter is not for you Pixie-poo.
Today’s snowshoe buddy. We only have 2 pairs so, we have to mix things up. Don’t worry, Pixie is still there too!
